A Tall Order for Tiny Home Builder Making Big Moves This Black Business Month

Smalltimore Homes Launches Fundraising Campaign to Combat Housing Crisis with Innovative Tiny Home Model

Baltimore, MD – August 6, 2024 – Smalltimore Homes, a nonprofit dedicated to eradicating homelessness and providing stable, affordable housing solutions, is proud to announce the launch of its latest fundraising campaign. The organization is seeking to raise $120,000 to build a tiny home model that exemplifies universal design, showcasing accessibility, sustainability, and modular living.

A Housing Crisis of Unprecedented Proportions

Baltimore faces a severe housing crisis, with city officials estimating that over 5,200 individuals experience homelessness, and an even greater number of residents live in precarious housing conditions. According to the Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services, approximately 1,600 men, women, and children are homeless in Baltimore City on any given night. Furthermore, The Sacramento Observer reports that 60% of people in Baltimore City face housing insecurities. This crisis is not only a matter of housing but a critical public health emergency, leading to increased health risks, from mental health issues to chronic diseases.

Smalltimore Homes: A Solution Rooted in Community Empowerment

Founded by LaQuida Chancey in 2018, Smalltimore Homes aims to address the root causes of homelessness by creating sustainable and affordable housing options for the unhoused. The nonprofit builds micro-shelters and tiny homes, leveraging volunteerism and community development to empower individuals and families.

“Our mission is to tackle the systemic barriers that lead to housing insecurity, providing people with the tools and resources necessary for homeownership and financial stability,” says Chancey. “We believe everyone deserves a place to call home, and by addressing these issues head-on, we can create healthier, stronger communities.”

The Vision: Universal Design for All

The funds raised through this campaign will be used to build a tiny home model featuring universal design principles. This model will demonstrate how accessible, sustainable, and modular housing can meet the diverse needs of Baltimore’s residents, including active elders and seniors, LGBTQIA+ individuals, aged foster youth, families with diverse abilities, and impaired veterans.

Universal design ensures that the homes are usable by everyone, regardless of age, ability, or status in life. Features include no-step entries, wide doorways, accessible bathrooms, and smart home technologies. These homes will not only provide immediate shelter but also adapt to the evolving needs of their occupants, allowing them to age in place and live independently for longer.
